The Ghan Departs from Inverleigh, Victoria for the First Time

A First-of-its-kind Departure

5 April 2022

Even trains sometimes like to take the track less travelled, and that’s exactly what The Ghan will be doing when it departs Inverleigh, Victoria, today, Tuesday 5 April 2022, with 230 guests and 40 staff onboard as part of a special Geelong Travel charter. This is the first time in The Ghan’s long history that it has departed from Inverleigh.

The iconic red and white loco that usually carves a path from Adelaide to Darwin through the Red Centre, will depart Inverleigh for Adelaide before heading north to Darwin on a three-night journey. The journey sold out so quickly – within two days – that a second departure was added in August, travelling the reverse path from Darwin to Inverleigh.

Australian media personality Ray Martin AM will be on board this inaugural charter and will be hosting a special talk to guests as part of their Off Train Experience in Adelaide.

This is an unusual departure for The Ghan, straying from its regular path between Adelaide and Darwin to depart from Inverleigh, Victoria for the first time. Geelong Travel Director Stuart Coffield said his clients love Australian rail journeys and to take The Ghan from Inverleigh and add an extra night to the journey is a dream holiday.
